Hawaii Eats: Liliha Bakery
Hawaii Eats
Turn around for a second and it seems that another shop or restaurant is closing here in Hawaii and with these closings, some of our history dies along with them. Indeed, our childhood memories themselves seem to recede deeper into forgetfulness when old time landmarks and places uniquely Hawaii disappear. Thankfully, there are still a few historic Hawaii eateries we call our own and Liliha Bakery is one of them.
Do you remember going there as a child, nose pressed up against the glass, pointing to all the yummy treats? Do you remember watching as the cooks slathered butter all over the hot griddle while you tried to wait patiently for your pancakes to be done?
Begun in 1950, Roy and Koo Takakuwa sold loaves of bread in their bakery on 1703 Liliha Street. Though the bakery later moved to Kuakini Street—its present day location—the Takakua’s kept the name. Roy Takakuwa died in 1985 and the business turned over to his son William who ran Liliha Bakery until it was sold in 2008 to Peter Kim, Yummy Korean BBQ’s entrepreneur.
Known then and now for their local style baked goodies, favorites include the coco puff, chantilly cake, ready to go pancake mix and coffee cake. The comfortingly old-fashioned diner offers 24 hour counter service (closed on Mondays) and the best fluffiest pancakes ever.
This is one Hawaii tradition that is not to be missed by locals and visitors alike!
What are your fondest Liliha Bakery memories?
