Lanai Lanai: The Pineapple IslandOnly about 141 square miles, the island of Lanai earned its nickname from its past major export, pineapple. Today, it continues to be an escape from the big city life boasting 4-wheel drives along roads void of traffic and traffic lights for that matter. The comma shaped island is only 9-miles from Maui, and like we’ve learned about Moloka’i, Ni’ihau, and Kaua’i — the culture of Lanai’s people have helped to preserve much of the isle’s original habitat.

As the pineapple industry began phasing out across the State of Hawaii, Lanai entered the tourism industry building two of the world’s most luxurious resorts; Koele Lodge and Manele Bay both properties part of the Four Seasons portfolio.

Activities on Lanai:

Need a break from the big city life, consider spending some time on Lanai. And, if you need first hand information, I recommend getting in touch with my friend Donna aka @Champuru on Twitter and the rest of the internet world — her father is from Lanai.
