Maybe it’s because somewhere in the back of my mind I’ve always wanted to be a librarian, or maybe it’s because I love to travel and reading is an inexpensive escape to different worlds, places and times. Whatever the reason, the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale beckons me. Despite the sweltering, sticky heat, I gleefully anticipate this tradition each and every summer and go armed with a wallet of cash in small bills, a hair clip (because did I mention it’s hot in there?) and a large cardboard box, which I ceremoniously pick up at the door upon entering. What lands in my boxes every year varies according to my mood at the time. In the last few years I have been hoarding, uh, I mean buying, loads of children’s books, art books, as well as books from favorite authors.

Hawaii BooksaleHeld at the McKinley High School Cafeteria, this island tradition is every bibliophile’s dream. This year, the Friends of the Library celebrates its 62nd Annual Book Sale which begins on Friday, June 19 with a member’s only preview sale and runs from 5pm to 9pm. The first day that the sale is open to the public is Saturday, June 20th and will run through June 28th. Different days will feature special pricing on various materials, including novels, paperbacks and music. And be sure not to miss the last two days of the sale! On June 27th all books at be 50% off, while on the last day, June 28th, all books will be sold for just 50 cents each!

So, what exactly is for sale? You can find magazines, and hardbacks, paperbacks and cd’s and everything in between in almost every genre. There are even collectible and rare books at the sale.

Annual membership with the Friends of the Library costs a mere $15 for students, seniors and the military. Individuals pay just $25. There are also rates for families, donors and benefactors as well as a special lifetime rate. I can’t think of a better gift (hint, hint) to give any time of the year! In addition to the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to support Hawaii’s public libraries, some of the other benefits include a subscription to the Friends’ quarterly newsletter, special announcements, and an invitation to the annual membership meeting. Finally, at the annual book sale, members enjoy a special exclusive preview sale.

So make room on those bookshelves and bring your rolling cart (or a strong friend) and join us for the 62nd Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale at the McKinley High School Cafeteria next week! For more information, please visit the links below:

LOVE this book sale! Last year was the first for my mom and I. We went on the second to the last day and ended up with boxes and boxes of finds! You can't go wrong. We probably should have brought a cart (I even saw someone with a big suitcase) but pushing around boxes worked too. Loved that everything was sorted by genre. Definitely going again this year and happy to give back to our libraries.

OMGosh, hi shmerin :). I just got back from the Friends of the Library Book Sale about 30 minutes ago and oh, but it was just lovely!!! I was a bit rushed since I got there late, but I shall go back again next week so that I can take my sweet ol’ time...sigh...I got a whole stack of wonderful reads (Virgina Woolf—“A Room of One’s Own”, Marquez’s—“Love in the Time of Cholera” and “Hilo Rains” a Bamboo Ridge collection of Poems) all for just under $25! Can you believe it?!

Glad you enjoyed the book sale too!

    Aloha,
    :) jan
