Hawaii Traditions: Traditions, Values and Culture

Traditions: A time-honored set of practices and elements of a culture passed down from generation to generation.

Much like the ocean tides that surround the islands of Hawaii, time-honored traditions flow abundantly throughout the generations. Over and over Hawaii has been described as a melting pot, and with respect to the interwoven cultural values and traditions – it’s refreshingly precise.

Values: A set of principles of right conduct.

Families, communities and individuals all have a set of values, while each has its own uniqueness quite often there’s a commonality. The entire community of Hawaii has contributed to a set of values that have become part of our traditions. We take these values with us as we travel through our islands, we send our children off to college with a reinforced set, and we freely share these values as we migrate around the world.

Culture: The beliefs, customs, practices and social behaviors of a particular people.

It’s evident that Hawaii has its own culture, but it’s even more dynamic. Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Ni’ihau, and the island of Hawaii all have their own culture. Moreover within each island; Lahaina, Kahakuloa, Kekaha, Kalaupapa, Honoka’a, Hilo, Lapahoehoe, Haleiwa – nearly every community has its own unique culture too.

Hawaii Traditions will journey through and share the traditions, values and culture…Hawaii style.
